1 Kings chapter 20 begins with the scene in which Ben-Hadad the king of Syria surrounds Samaria with a great army. Ahab was not a king upright before God. He had followed the sin of Jeroboam, and he was the king who had made Israel sin with the worship of Baal and Asherah. Such Ahab was arrogant before the word of God, but before Ben-Hadad’s threat he tried to submit servilely. A person who has left God cannot stand boldly before the powers of the world and the demands of sin.
